NOTA_Confidentiality_Practices_Workshop

NOTA cordially invites all of you to the 2014 Spring Series Workshop & Cultural Event Program, which is scheduled for Saturday, May 3, 2014.

Our program will begin with a visit to the Akron Art Museum located at 1 S. High Street, Akron, OH 44308, which will take place from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and which will offer you a pleasant opportunity to enjoy numerous works of art and sculpture while mingling and socializing with other NOTA colleagues. Enclosed please see the Akron Museum of Art flier for more detailed information. The admission fees are free for museum members, $7/person for adults/non-members, and $5/person for seniors (65+) and students (with a valid student ID). If you would be interested in joining NOTA for a visit to the Akron Art Museum, please email Vitaliy at vvp13ster@gmail and indicate the total number of guests in your group (including yourself) that will be visiting the museum.

The museum visit will be followed by the Workshop on Ethics and Confidentiality Practices, which will run from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m and will be held at the Akron Main Library located at 60 S High Street, Akron, OH 44326. The workshop will be in the form of an interactive roundtable discussion that will examine some of the main issues related to ethics and confidentiality practices that are commonly observed in both the translation and interpreting environments and will offer some useful tips on how to adhere to these ethics and confidentiality principles and avoid unclear situations that lead to violation of these principles. The workshop will be led by John P. Shaklee, Natasha Curtis and Jill R. Sommer. Enclosed please find the Workshop flier for more detailed information. The admission fees will be set as follows: $10/person – for NOTA Members, $20/person – for non-members, and free for students (with a valid student ID). Finally, our 2014 Spring Series Workshop & Cultural Event Program will wrap up with a tasteful and exotic dinner at Cilantro Thai & Sushi Restaurant, located at 326 S. Main Street, Akron, OH 44326, which will feature a vivid spectrum of meal selections from Thai and Japanese cuisine. Please see the restaurant flier enclosed for more detailed information on the menu selections. The dinner will start at 5:00 p.m. and will offer a regular dinner menu. Each guest will be issued a separate bill, which will be payable directly to the restaurant. In addition to the workshop, our program schedule will include a visit to Akron Museum of Art from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for those of you who are passionate art lovers or simply would like to mingle with your colleagues. And, after the workshop, we will head down to Cilantro Thai & Sushi Bar for a taste of authentic Thai delicacies. The dinner is expected to start at 5:00 p.m., but stay tuned, as more information on the menu selections will be coming in.

POINTS OF BUSINESS

What happens at a NOTA board meeting? First the group noshes while each chair reports on current and past activities. Jill Sommer, Membership Chair, initiated a lively discussion about revamping the web page to streamline the registration process, automatically send renewals and present a more user-friendly site. Treasurer Reinhold Federmann reported a balance of $13,791.60 and dutifully filed Form 990 with the Internal Revenue Service in order to maintain our non-profit status. Jill chimed in with news that PayPal will no longer charge us $1.00 transaction fee with our non-profit status. According to figures NOTA’s membership veers toward ninety members. Svetlana Ball encourages members to send her informative stories to hear for the next NOTA BENE at cyrillico@embarqmail.com.

ATA EXAM

Vitaliy Plinto, Program Chair, orchestrated the ATA exam and currently prepares for the upcoming workshop on ethics and confidentiality practices or interpreters and translators. ATA Certification exam will be held Saturday, May 17  from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Click on the link below for details.NOTA casts an eye to Columbus for the 2015 sitting. Svetlana Ball, NOTA Public Relations Chair and ATA Certified Translator EN>RU, offered to proctor next year.

UPCOMING EVENT

Vitaliy updated us on the ethics and confidentiality practices workshop coming soon. Come and comment at a roundtable with Jill Sommer (translation), John P. Shaklee (court interpreting) and Natasha Curtis (medical interpreting). Location and date TBA.

UPCOMING INFORMAL EVENT

Meet up to view “Van Gogh Repetitions” on Sunday, April 20th at the Cleveland Museum of Art. We’ll meet at the main entrance at 1:00 p.m. www.clevelandart.org.

ATA_Certification_Exam_Announcement

Dear NOTA Members,
 
NOTA will be hosting an ATA Certification Exam, which will be held on May 17th, 2014 from 1 p. m. to 4 p.m. in Satterfield Hall Room 112-A, Kent State University located in Kent, Ohio 44242. Please see the flier attached for more detailed information concerning exam sitting requirements, fees and registration information. Please note: this will be a handwritten exam.
 
All candidates must meet education and experience prerequisites prior to registering for the exam and provide proof of a combination of education and work experience in order to qualify to take the examination. To ensure that you meet the necessary education and experience prerequisites for the exam, you must complete the Eligibility Requirements Form and submit it to the ATA Headquarters along with a payment of $35. You can download the Eligibility Requirements Form as well as the instructions on how to complete it from the following link: http://www.atanet.org/certification/eligibility_requirementsform.php.
 
To be eligible to take the exam, candidate must be an ATA member prior to the exam date and all candidates not currently ATA certified must have offered proof of eligibility in order to register for the exam. All sittings have a maximum capacity and admission is based on the order in which registrations are received at Headquarters.
 
The ATA Exam registration fee is $300. To register for the exam, please go to the following link: http://www.atanet.org/certification/upcoming.php to access the Upcoming Exam Sittings and Registration Form. Please print the form, complete it and submit it to the ATA Headquarters along with your payment of $300. Please note that the payment must be received by ATA Headquarters at least two weeks prior to the exam date (no later than May 3, 2013 for the Kent exam sitting). Otherwise, late registrations, if accepted, are subject to an additional fee of $45, if Headquarters determines that the candidate meets the eligibility requirements, the space is available and that exams can be delivered in time.
